Cherries: The Glossy Jewels of June

Cherries are the first major fruits of the season - glossy red, juicy sweet and the pinnacle of summer indulgence. From sweet Napoleon cherries to sour cherries for processing, each variety brings its own charm.

The region of De Betuwe and areas like Mierlo are known for growing delicious Dutch cherries, such as the famous Mierlose Zwarte, which can be enjoyed fresh or in traditional dishes.

🍒 The Right Picking Moment

Cherry season in the Netherlands is short but sweet, usually running from mid-June to late July.

Pick cherries when they:

  • Are fully colored (red to dark red)
  • Feel firm but juicy
  • Have glossy skin
  • Give off sweet fragrance at the stem

Tip: Always pick with the stem - they keep much longer!

🧊 Short Shelf Life

Cherries keep for 3-5 days in the refrigerator. Eat them quickly for best flavor, or process immediately into:

  • Cherry jam - Summer preserve
  • Cherry pie - Classic dessert
  • Cherry liqueur - For winter
