Why pick your own?
Freshly picked fruit and vegetables taste different. Not necessarily better — but more honest, fuller, and with a satisfaction you simply can’t buy at the supermarket. You choose the moment: the strawberry that’s exactly ripe, the courgette that’s just the right size, the sunflower at its most beautiful. You also get outside, move around, and let children — or yourself — discover where food really comes from.
How does it work?
Most u-pick farms don’t require a reservation. You drive to the farm, grab a basket or bucket, and get picking. At the end of your visit, your harvest is weighed and you pay — fair, simple, and almost always cheaper than the supermarket. Some farms charge a small admission fee, but most don’t. Handy tip: wear old clothes and bring a box or cool bag for the trip home. Arrive early on busy summer days — the best strawberries go to whoever gets there first.
Seasonal calendar
Picking has a rhythm. Asparagus and rhubarb open the season in April and May. Then come strawberries and cherries in June, followed by raspberries, berries and beans in July and August. September and October are the months for apples, pears, pumpkins and grapes. Even in winter there are farms with lamb’s lettuce, kale and other cold-season vegetables. Check back regularly to know exactly where and when to go.
