Pick Your Own Cranberries in the Netherlands

There’s something wonderfully satisfying about wading into a bright, boggy field on a crisp autumn day, armed with a bucket and a sense of adventure. In the Netherlands, several farms invite you to pick your own cranberries – and trust me, it’s a lot more fun than grabbing a bag from the supermarket. These little red gems grow low to the ground, nestled in sandy soil, almost like nature’s own hidden treasure. You’ll be bending, squatting, and laughing as you and your friends or family race to see who can fill their basket fastest. The best part? The berries bounce when you drop them (really – it’s a sign they’re ripe). So go ahead, get a little muddy, and enjoy the fresh air. Just don’t forget to taste a few along the way – they’re tartly addictive.

Once you’re home, you’ll have a glorious haul of cranberries. They keep well in the fridge for weeks, or you can freeze them in a single layer on a tray, then bag them up for use all winter. Here are a few ways to turn your harvest into something delicious.

Two Cooking Recipes

1. Classic Cranberry Sauce (Not Just for Turkey) This is the simplest, most versatile recipe. It’s perfect on roasted meats, toast, or even stirred into yogurt.

  • Ingredients: 500g fresh cranberries, 200g sugar, 150ml water (or orange juice for a twist), zest of one orange.
  • Method: In a saucepan, combine the water (or juice), sugar, and orange zest. Bring to a simmer, stirring until sugar dissolves. Add the cranberries. Cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes – you’ll hear them pop and see the sauce thicken. Let it cool; it will set further as it sits. Done. Serve warm or cold.

2. Cranberry & Apple Crumble A cozy dessert that lets the tart berries shine against a sweet, crunchy topping.

  • Ingredients: 400g cranberries, 2 large apples (peeled and diced), 100g sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, 150g flour, 100g butter, 80g oats, 80g brown sugar.
  • Method: Preheat oven to 180°C. Mix the cranberries, apples, sugar, and cinnamon in a baking dish. In a bowl, rub the butter into the flour until it looks like breadcrumbs, then stir in oats and brown sugar. Sprinkle the crumble over the fruit. Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden and bubbling. Serve with vanilla ice cream or custard.

One Cocktail Recipe

Cranberry Gin Fizz This is a bright, refreshing cocktail that captures the essence of your hand-picked berries.

  • Ingredients: 50ml gin, 100ml fresh cranberry juice (made by blending 200g cranberries with 100ml water and 1 tbsp sugar, then straining), juice of half a lemon, 1 tsp simple syrup (optional), soda water, ice.
  • Method: In a shaker with ice, combine gin, cranberry juice, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Shake well for 10 seconds. Strain into a tall glass filled with ice. Top with soda water. Garnish with a few fresh cranberries and a sprig of rosemary. Cheers to your hard work in the bog!
