Friesland farms

We have around fifteen pick-your-own farms in Friesland. A striking number are flower gardens, dahlias in particular. You can harvest vegetables in a few places; fruit is limited to some blueberries and strawberries. Most of the farms we mention below are in the south-east (Makkinga, Oosterwolde, Appelscha) or in the Wâlden area in the north-east.

Four pick-your-own farms in Friesland up close

Frisian picking gardens are small and keep short hours. Sometimes one morning and one evening a week. So check before you go.

Hanna’s Pluktuin in Makkinga is a family business on a farmyard. Lots of kinds: dahlias, zinnias, sunflowers, strawflowers, snapdragons and another twenty or so. Open Thursday evening from 19:00 until sunset and Saturday from 10:00 to 12:00. That’s it. A bouquet costs €10 to €12.50. No dogs, except assistance dogs. On Saturdays there is coffee.

Klaver en Papaver in Oosterwolde is small, a bit over 500 m², but grows more than 100 kinds. Ranunculus, sweet peas, zinnias, dahlias. Self-service from July through October: scissors, string and a folder with picking tips are there. Pay in cash or with a QR code.

Pluktuin de Wâlden in Twijzelerheide has only dahlias, more than 100 varieties. Open Saturdays only, 10:00 to 16:00, and not before mid-July. Free parking, a toilet and picnic tables.

Ecologische Tuinderij De Tilgrupshof in Appelscha is something else entirely: a self-harvest garden for members, started in January 2024. From mid-May through November you can harvest every day, sunrise to sunset. The list is long (purslane, garlic, artichokes, yacón, sweet potato) but you do need to be a member. Not the place for a one-off visit.

Most of the farms above have only a handful of reviews; only Pluktuin de Wâlden has a few more. So we don’t know a great deal more about them than what they put on their own websites.

Beiketún

At Beiketún in Twijzel you pick your own blueberries from July to October. The farm grows several varieties to extend the season. The berries are unsprayed and grown without chemical pesticides or artificial fertiliser. You pay by weight: €8.50 a kilo. Bring your own containers or use the ones provided. The farm asks visitors to weigh their berries and pay in the cash box or by bank transfer. Children must be supervised, and smoking is not allowed. Dogs are not mentioned.

Hanna's Pluktuin

At Hanna’s Pluktuin in Makkinga, you pick your own seasonal flowers directly from the field. The farm grows dahlias, zinnias, sunflowers, amaranthus, ornamental tobacco, statice, salvia, scabiosa, fountain grass, calendula, strawflowers, echinacea, yarrow, sea lavender, snapdragons, bishop’s weed, nigella, bronze fennel, phlox, globe amaranth, lion’s tail, marguerites and more. The selection changes through the season. You pay €12.50 for a hand-held bouquet of 20 to 25 stems, which you cut yourself with scissors provided. The farm also sells gift vouchers starting at €10, valid for two years on fresh bouquets, dried flowers and decorative items. Pre-arranged bouquets can be ordered in advance for collection.

Klaver en Papaver

At Klaver en Papaver in Oosterwolde you pick your own seasonal flowers from July to October. The field covers 500 square metres and grows over 100 varieties, including zinnias, dahlias, ranunculus and sweet peas. The farm also sells ready-made bouquets and flower subscriptions from May to October. You pick flowers that are in bloom and pay by the bunch: 10 stems for €6, 15 for €9, 20 for €12 or 25 for €15. A self-service station provides scissors, twine and wrapping, and you can pay in cash or by QR code. The farm is not always staffed, but the setup lets you pick and pay on your own. Bring your own bucket for warm days.

Pluktuin de Wâlden

Pluktuin de Wâlden in Twijzelerheide is a pick-your-own dahlia farm with over 100 varieties growing across nearly 7,000 square metres. The season runs from July to October, with the farm open every Saturday from 10.00 to 16.00. Visitors receive a bucket and secateurs on arrival and pay per stem—€0.75 for a dahlia or €0.50 for other homegrown cut flowers. A bundle of 15 dahlias costs €10. The farm uses no pesticides and works only with organic fertilisers, selling flowers that are freshly picked and locally grown.

Pluktuin Ravenswoud

Pluktuin Ravenswoud in Ravenswoud is a pick-your-own flower garden where you cut your own seasonal blooms. The field covers about a thousand square metres and is open by appointment from June to September. For €7.50, you receive a basket and scissors to pick 20 stems, enough for a large, pesticide-free bouquet. The farm also hosts occasional open days when no appointment is needed; dates are posted on its Facebook page.

Fruithof De struikrover

Fruithof de Struikrover in Oldeholtpade is a pick-your-own farm growing over 20 types of fruit, mostly berries. The main crops are blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries, along with less common varieties such as tayberries, honeyberries, aronia berries, jostaberries, Japanese wineberries, elderberries, rosehips, gooseberries, quinces, medlars, sea buckthorn and figs. The farm also has flowers for picking, including marigolds, cornflowers and sunflowers. The farm is open for picking from mid-June to mid-September, with the season running on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 09.00 to 17.00. Outside the picking season, the farm is open on Saturdays for buying cuttings, shrubs, seeds and young plants. All produce is grown organically without pesticides.

Bij Buurman

Bij Buurman in Kortehemmen is a pick-your-own vegetable and flower garden where members can harvest fresh produce weekly during the growing season. The farm operates on a membership basis, with the season running from May to November. Members pay a seasonal fee—€250 to €350 for adults, with children aged 5 to 17 paying ten times their age and younger children free—and can visit the garden from Tuesday to Saturday between 9.30 and 17.00 to pick what they need. The farm grows around 60 to 80 varieties of vegetables and herbs, including standard crops like lettuce, carrots and courgettes, as well as less common ones such as kohlrabi, parsnips and coloured carrots. A greenhouse now also produces tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. Weekly newsletters and orange signs in the garden indicate which crops are ready for harvest.

De Tuin naast de Branding

De Tuin naast de Branding is a pick-your-own garden on Schiermonnikoog where you can harvest vegetables, herbs, flowers and oyster mushrooms. The season runs from late May to mid-November, with the widest selection available between June and October. In mid-October, crops include lettuce, Swiss chard, garlic, pak choi, endive, beetroot, rocket, New Zealand spinach, kale, pointed cabbage, celeriac, fennel, herbs and flowers. Some vegetables, such as courgettes, pattypan squash and peppers, are limited to a small daily harvest. The farm also sells Schier soap and Wilder Land tea.

Camping Jachthaven en Blauwe Bessen zelfpluktuin 'De Lytse Brekken'

At De Lytse Brekken in Follega you pick your own blueberries during the season, which typically runs from mid-July to late August. The farm is part of a small campsite and marina on the edge of the Frisian Lakes, with the blueberry field open to both guests and day visitors. You pick directly from the bushes, using containers provided by the farm, and pay by weight. The field is accessible during opening hours, which are usually Wednesday to Saturday, 10.00 to 16.00, though exact dates and times are confirmed each year on the farm’s website. There is a small terrace next to the field where you can sit with coffee or tea after picking.

Ecologische Tuinderij De Tilgrupshof

At Ecologische Tuinderij De Tilgrupshof in Appelscha you pick your own organic vegetables and herbs from mid-May to November. The farm works on a membership system called oogstgenoot, or harvest partner. You pay an annual fee at the start of the season, which covers the whole household. The standard fee is €275 per share, but you can choose to pay between €200 and €350 depending on your budget. Children under 10 pick for free, and those aged 10 to 18 pay half price.

Pluktuin PlukWad

Pluktuin PlukWad in Wijnaldum is a pick-your-own flower farm where you can cut your own bouquets from early July until late autumn. The field grows a mix of annuals and dahlias, with varieties chosen for their long vase life. You pay by the stem, using a simple measuring board at the entrance: slide the stems through the holes to see the price, then scan a QR code to pay or drop cash into a box. The farm provides scissors and buckets of water to keep flowers fresh while you pick.

De Zomerschuur in Burgum is a pick-your-own farm with a focus on flowers, herbs and seasonal produce from its own gardens. Visitors can pick edible flowers such as nasturtium, cornflower, marigold, violet and sunflower, as well as herbs and salad leaves from the kitchen garden. The farm also has a small orchard where you can pick apples and pears in season. Picking is available for €7.50, which allows you to create your own bouquet. In the orchard, you pay for the fruit you pick by weight. The farm provides containers, but you can also bring your own. The flower and herb gardens are designed for easy access, with raised beds and clear paths.

Boeren in het Bos

Boeren in het Bos in Nijeberkoop is a regenerative farm with a pick-your-own vegetable garden. The farm grows a variety of seasonal vegetables, herbs, and flowers, which visitors can harvest themselves from spring to autumn. The selection changes throughout the year, with crops such as kale, cabbage, carrots, beetroot, and courgettes available at different times. The farm also cultivates herbs like parsley, thyme, and rosemary, as well as edible flowers.

Ús Hôf

Ús Hôf in Sibrandabuorren is a pick-your-own farm specialising in fruit and nuts rather than vegetables. While the farm is currently not offering vegetable harvesting for new subscribers, visitors can pick plums, mirabelles, greengages, damsons, apples, pears, hazelnuts and almonds during the season. Plucking days are organised from late July through October, with the first plums typically ready by the end of July, followed by other fruits in autumn. You pay a small fee per kilo for the produce you pick, which is intended for home use—eating fresh or making jams and compotes. The farm provides basic refreshments, and visitors are advised to bring their own buckets or crates. The farm is open daily from 09.00 to 20.00, though these hours may vary during plucking events.

Rinsumageest

Pluktuinfleurich is a small-scale garden located in Rinsumageast, situated in the meadow between Eysingawei 17 and 19. It offers visitors the opportunity to self-pick flowers. The garden is typically open on Saturdays from 10:00 to 17:00 and on Thursday evenings, though it is advisable to check for any differing opening times.
