Landgoed de Olmenhorst is a vast 31-hectare estate, located centrally in the Randstad, dedicated to organic fruit cultivation since 2005. The farm boasts a rich history spanning over 170 years and operates under a commitment to sustainable practices and biodiversity.
Visitors to the estate can engage in self-picking activities for a range of produce. Apples are available for picking, with varieties including Elstar, Santana, Jonagold, Jonagored, Topaz, Autento, Goudreinette (Rode Boskoop), Alkmene, and Natyra. Pears can also be self-picked, featuring varieties such as Conference, Doyenné du Comice, Concorde, Triomphe de Vienne, Beurré Alexander Lucas, and Comice Bronzé, as well as stewing pears like Gieser Wildeman, Winterjan, Zoete Brederode, and Winterrietpeer.
Self-picking is offered through “Zelfpluk” for the general public, typically from September to October on specific days, and “Adoptiepluk,” where individuals or businesses can adopt an apple tree and harvest its full yield during a designated picking window. Educational “Kinderappelpluk” sessions are also available for schools and groups.
Beyond the orchards, the estate features “De Fruitloods,” a cafe and restaurant serving organic juices, homemade apple pie, and meals made with local products. Various “Ateliers” host creative workshops, including candle making, weaving, and silk painting. A rustic camping site is set to open in 2026, offering a peaceful stay amidst the orchards. The landgoed is also a venue for diverse events, such as weddings, corporate meetings, team-building activities, and private celebrations, with several distinct locations like Het Boshuis and Het Paviljoen. Throughout the year, seasonal dinners, Harvest Festivals, and educational programs at the “Proeftuin” (Test Garden) enrich the visitor experience. The estate includes a playground for children and welcomes leashed dogs, though not inside the cafe.
What visitors say
This self-picking farm and garden is widely regarded as a delightful destination, particularly popular with families for its apple and pear picking opportunities. Many visitors appreciate the fresh, organic fruit and the beautiful natural surroundings, describing it as a relaxed and pleasant place for a day out or a walk. The “adopt-a-tree” program is a highlight for some, ensuring guaranteed fun.
The on-site cafe, “De Fruitloods,” receives numerous compliments for its atmosphere and food. Patrons frequently praise the delicious homemade apple pie, fresh juices (especially cloudy apple and pear juice), coffee, and a range of tasty and healthy lunch and dinner options, including high tea. The shop also sells various natural and organic products, from freshly baked sourdough bread and cheese to produce. The staff are often noted for being friendly and customer-focused, contributing to a generally positive experience. The estate is also recognized as a suitable venue for family celebrations, staff parties, and school trips, featuring a playground for children.
However, a significant number of visitors express concerns about increasing commercialization and pricing. Many find the costs for parking and toilet use (€0.50 - €3.00) disappointing, especially after spending a considerable amount on-site or for self-picked fruit, which some deem as expensive as supermarket prices. This commercial shift, along with the replacement of older, unique stalls with “hip new kids’ tents,” has led some long-time visitors to feel the estate has lost some of its original charm and uniqueness, giving it a “theme park” feel.
During peak picking days, the farm can become extremely crowded and noisy, with some disliking the presence of a DJ and finding the atmosphere less pleasant. There have also been occasional complaints about slow service, particularly long waits for food, minor quality issues such as lukewarm coffee or dry apple pie, and a lack of clear signage for navigation, sometimes coupled with perceived unfriendliness from management when issues arise. Despite these criticisms, many continue to enjoy the core experience of picking their own fruit and the overall ambiance.
