Fruithof De struikrover

Fruithof de Struikrover is an organic self-picking farm and garden situated in Oldeholtpade, Friesland, close to Wolvega. Established in the autumn of 2013, this 1.5-hectare farm practices biological cultivation, abstaining entirely from pesticides.

Visitors are invited to pick a diverse range of produce directly from the fields. The farm specializes in blueberries, dedicating a significant portion of its land to them, but also offers a wide selection of other fruits. These include common berries such as raspberries, blackberries, redcurrants, gooseberries (both green and red varieties), and strawberries. For those seeking more unique flavors, the farm cultivates honeyberries, tayberries, elderberries, rosehips, quinces, medlars, sea buckthorn, aronia berries, jostaberries, Japanese wineberries, and figs. Other fruits like apples, grapes, Juneberries, cherries, and Nashi pears are also grown. Beyond fruits, the garden features numerous flower varieties and a new corner for vegetables and herbs, with asparagus and dandelions (used for syrup) available.

Fruithof de Struikrover is open every Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM for the sale of fruit cuttings, shrubs, seeds, and young plants. During the peak picking season, typically from mid-June to mid-September, the farm extends its opening hours to include Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 AM to 5 PM. A recently added tea house at the entrance serves coffee, tea, lemonade, and smoothies.

The farm is designed to offer a rich experience, encouraging a deep connection with nature. Guests can enjoy panoramic views from a watchtower overlooking the fruit rows, which are protected by a large bird net. The act of picking berries is presented as a meditative experience, and occasional full moon yoga sessions are held on the premises. Children are warmly welcomed, with playful amenities like a sandpit and a trampoline. The farm’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its use of drip irrigation and birdhouses for natural pest control. In addition to fresh produce, visitors can purchase a variety of homemade products such as jams, juices, chutneys, and sauces, all crafted from the farm’s harvest. The farm operates independently, without subsidies, and fosters a community spirit, often engaging volunteers in its upkeep.
