Fruitkwekerij Berkenbroek in Wittelte grows blueberries, raspberries and strawberries for pick-your-own from late May until the end of October. The farm has two locations: the blueberries grow on the slopes of the Havelterberg near Darp, while the raspberries and strawberries are cultivated in a polytunnel in Wittelte. Varieties include Duke, Liberty, Valor and Aurora blueberries; Kwanza raspberries; and Sonata, Sonsation, Dali, Furore and Favori strawberries.
You pick and pay by the kilo. The farm does not use chemical pesticides, relying instead on natural predators and organic methods. During the blueberry season in Darp, visitors can also pick their own berries directly from the bushes. The farm provides instructions on how to pick efficiently.
The self-service farm shop in Wittelte sells fresh fruit, homemade juices and syrups from the end of May to the end of October. Payment is by cash or QR code. Customers can return used bottles and containers for reuse or recycling. The shop is open daily during the season.
From July to the end of August, the farm hires seasonal workers aged 13 and over to help with picking. These workers are paid per kilo, with a minimum hourly rate for those aged 15 and above.
Fruitkwekerij Berkenbroek also sells its produce at local markets and fairs, including the Streek en Landleven Exloo, Vleddermarkt and Orveltermarkt. Dates for these events are listed on the farm’s website.
