Het Groente Genootschap is a self-picking farm that operates on a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model, inviting local residents to harvest their own seasonal produce. The farm adheres to biological and ecological principles, focusing on enhancing biodiversity and soil health.
Currently, the farm maintains two active locations. The ‘De Zanderij’ site in Castricum features a self-picking garden and an adjacent ‘BloemenBos’ (Flower Forest). A second location in Heemskerk is situated within a historical vegetable garden and orchard at Kasteel Marquette. Plans are also underway to establish a new self-picking garden in Heiloo, with interest being actively gauged from the community.
Members purchase a seasonal subscription, which grants them weekly access to harvest a variety of fresh produce during the growing season, typically from May to December. An autumn-specific subscription is also available for the Heemskerk location.
The farm offers a diverse range of items for self-picking:
- Vegetables: A varied selection including common choices like lettuce, fennel, zucchini, pumpkin, and endive, as well as less familiar varieties such as kale, chioggia beets, patisson, turnip greens, and Jerusalem artichoke. Seasonal availability ranges from 4-7 types in spring to 8-10 types in summer and autumn, extending to winter vegetables.
- Herbs: Fresh herbs like coriander, basil, parsley, mint, and thyme are available for harvesting throughout the year.
- Small fruit: This is available as part of the harvest, particularly from the orchard at the Heemskerk location.
- Flowers: Members can pick fresh, unsprayed flower bouquets from the ‘BloemenBos’ in Castricum, and edible flowers are also offered.
One share typically provides enough vegetables for one person’s 4-5 meals per week, and members are encouraged to harvest only for immediate fresh consumption. The farm promotes a strong community spirit, facilitating shared recipes and hosting harvest festivals. A solidary payment system is in place, allowing members to choose their subscription price based on their financial capacity, which helps ensure access to healthy, local food for everyone.
