Hof van Gunterstein

Hof van Gunterstein

Hof van Gunterstein is a small-scale, organic farm located on the historic Landgoed Gunterstein in Breukelen, Netherlands. The farm focuses on sustainable and natural agriculture, raising rare Dutch Blaarkop cattle and keeping free-range chickens. It operates a farm shop, offers accommodation, and hosts a self-pick vegetable garden and a flower-picking field. The farm is open seasonally, with the main vegetable self-pick program running throughout the growing season.

Visitors can self-pick vegetables, herbs, and flowers directly from the fields. The self-pick vegetable garden is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model, where members purchase a share for the season and come weekly to harvest their own produce. This garden offers over 60 different varieties of vegetables and herbs throughout the year, from spring roots like turnips and broad beans to fall greens like kale and winter purslane. The self-pick flower garden (Bloemenpluktuin) is open daily for picking from late June through September.

Beyond self-picking, the farm has an on-site shop (Hofwinkel) open Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00. The shop sells organic produce, fresh bread, eggs, meat from the farm’s own Blaarkop cattle, and dairy products. Raw milk is available for self-service daily from 07:00 to 20:00. The farm also welcomes volunteers on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 09:30 to 12:30, offers a holiday rental cottage (‘Het Zomerhuisje’), and provides a meeting space (‘Het Paardenhuisje’) that can be rented by the half-day, including options for lunch, tours, and workshops. The grounds are wheelchair accessible, with a wheelchair-accessible entrance and parking.

What visitors say

This self-picking farm and its accompanying shop consistently receive high praise for offering a wide array of high-quality, fresh, organic, and pesticide-free produce. Visitors particularly commend the delicious raw milk available straight from the tap, often noted for its richer and superior taste compared to pasteurized supermarket varieties. Beyond milk, customers appreciate the excellent farm-produced meat, fresh fruits, vegetables, potatoes, and other dairy products.

The location itself is celebrated for its beautiful setting, featuring a well-maintained farmyard and a large picking garden that provides seasonal produce throughout the summer. Many describe it as a delightful discovery and a true “pearl” in the region. The clean, new shop is noted for its friendly and sympathetic staff, contributing to an overall positive experience. It also serves as a great spot to enjoy coffee, cake, or other snacks, and has been recognized for its family-friendly atmosphere, occasionally offering activities like games for children during special events.

While the organic and pesticide-free nature of the products means they are sometimes pricier, customers generally feel this is justified by the quality. Potential visitors should be aware of the shop’s specific opening hours, which are typically limited to Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 to 17:00. Although there was one instance of a customer expressing dissatisfaction over a perceived misunderstanding regarding a buttermilk deposit, the owner provided a thorough explanation clarifying the different pricing and deposit structures for their two distinct buttermilk brands. Overall, the sentiment towards the farm and its offerings is overwhelmingly positive.
