LOCOtuinen is a cooperative self-pick farm located in Maastricht, in the Oud-Caberg neighborhood, situated across from De Poshoof on Postbaan 8. The farm operates on a community-supported agriculture (CSA) model, where members and local farmers work together to produce local, healthy, and ecologically grown food. The focus is on co-production, shared responsibility, and fostering a connection between people and their food source. Farming methods are chemical-free and prioritize soil health, biodiversity, and sustainable practices. The farm is a cooperative association (Coöperatieve Vereniging LOCOtuinen Maastricht B.A.), founded in 2014, and is fully operational.
Members of LOCOtuinen can self-pick a wide variety of seasonal vegetables directly from the garden. The harvest season runs for approximately 30 weeks, typically starting in late spring or early summer and continuing through late autumn, with some harvests possible until January. Participants receive a weekly “oogstmail” (harvest email) informing them of what is ready to pick. The variety of produce changes with the season and includes leafy greens such as lettuce and Swiss chard, heads of cabbage including broccoli, cauliflower, and kale, root vegetables like beets, carrots, kohlrabi, and celeriac, as well as other crops like fennel, corn, beans, spinach, leeks, and courgette. Potatoes and onions are generally not grown in the self-pick garden but are available from the neighboring farm, De Poshoof.
The farm is open for self-picking every day of the week from 08:00 to 20:00. The cooperative works with a system of memberships and harvest share subscriptions. An introductory trial subscription (Proefabonnement) is available for four weeks. Students are offered a special flexible membership with no entrance fee or yearly contribution. Members and visitors are welcome to visit the garden during the growing season, with guided work and information sessions usually held on Wednesday mornings from 09:00 to 13:00.
