Plantage Blankwater is a 62-hectare estate situated in Boukoul, part of the municipality of Roermond, bordering Germany. The property is set within a picturesque natural landscape, surrounded by various nature reserves and forests, including the Meinweggebiet, with the Pieterpad hiking trail running alongside its fields. The estate encompasses woodland, grassland, and a 20-hectare blueberry plantation established in 1969.
The farm offers visitors the opportunity for self-picking blueberries, typically available from mid-July through September. Guests are provided with a bucket to collect their berries, which are then weighed. As of summer 2025, the blueberries cultivated here are officially certified organic.
In addition to self-picking, the farm features a lunch café with a terrace offering views of the blueberry fields. It serves coffee, homemade sweet treats, and an extensive lunch menu. A farm shop is also on-site, selling fresh blueberries during the season, frozen organic blueberries year-round, and various blueberry-based products, such as 100% pure blueberry juice.
Plantage Blankwater is also a venue for various activities and events. It offers creative workshops for groups and provides facilities for meetings, parties, and celebrations, including a dedicated meeting room for up to 12 people. During the festive season, starting in late November, the farm sells fresh local Christmas trees and decorative accessories.
The estate is generally open daily, with hours typically ranging from 9:00 or 10:00 AM to 5:00 or 5:30 PM, varying slightly by season.
What visitors say
This self-picking farm and café is widely praised as a delightful and welcoming destination, cherished for its beautiful natural setting amidst expansive blueberry plantations. Visitors appreciate the inviting atmosphere, whether seated indoors in a cozy greenhouse, sometimes featuring a wood stove, or on the spacious outdoor terrace offering views of the fields.
A major attraction is the opportunity for self-picking blueberries during the season, an activity particularly popular with families, though some note that a minimum picking quantity might not suit younger children who tire quickly. For those preferring convenience, a well-stocked farm shop offers fresh blueberries, a wide array of homemade blueberry products like jams, pies, and milkshakes, as well as other local produce and charming gifts.
The café itself consistently receives high marks for its delicious food and drinks. Patrons frequently rave about the blueberry pie, milkshakes, and various lunch options, including savory pancakes, fresh salads, and generously filled sandwiches, all offered at reasonable prices. Many consider it an ideal and accessible stop for a coffee break, lunch, or snack during a walking or cycling trip, often referring to it as an “oasis” in the scenic surroundings, conveniently located near trails like the Pieterpad. The ample, free parking is also a plus.
Service is generally lauded as friendly, attentive, and hospitable, contributing significantly to the overall positive experience. However, a recurring point of concern is slow service, particularly during peak times, which some reviewers attribute to understaffing. There are a few isolated reports of unfriendly staff interactions and one instance of a disappointing dish accompanied by a dismissive response. Despite these minor criticisms, the overwhelming sentiment is positive, with many guests eagerly anticipating return visits to this charming establishment.
