Pluktuin Lageweg is a self-picking flower garden located in Bedum, opposite house number 20. It operates during the summer months, typically open on Friday and Sunday afternoons from 2 PM to 5 PM, though opening times may vary due to weather conditions like rain or heat, with updates posted on site and social media.
The garden is owned by Hero and Joke Beukema, who started preparations in autumn 2019, aiming to create an oasis rich in diverse flowers and insects, complementing existing trees. In 2023, Joke partnered with Laura van Kleef, and the garden is supported by enthusiastic volunteers. It functions as a non-profit initiative, with all proceeds reinvested into garden improvements and supplies.
Visitors can enjoy an open public garden, where they can pick flowers for a small fee or simply relax in one of the many seating areas while enjoying a cup of tea or coffee. The garden emphasizes nature-friendly practices, cultivating “clean flowers” without pesticides. The soil is enriched with homemade compost and organic soil, and natural methods are used for pest control, such as hedgehogs for slugs. The selection of plants considers species that attract bees and butterflies, as well as those suitable for cut flowers.
For self-picking, the garden offers a wide variety of flowers, including annuals like Cosmos, Great Masterwort, Dill, and Snapdragon, as well as perennials such as Dahlias. Additionally, shrubs and various grasses are available. Herbs like fennel, mint, and dill are also grown, serving as beautiful “connectors” in a bouquet. Sunflowers are also among the available choices. Special picking baskets and shears are provided. Each stem or flower costs between 60-75 cents, with Dahlias and sunflowers priced at 75 cents. The farm can wrap bouquets beautifully, making them suitable as gifts, and offers assistance with picking if desired. Gift certificates are also available.
Payment can be made via debit card or digitally using a QR code.
Beyond picking, Pluktuin Lageweg serves as a community meeting place and hosts various activities. These have included rural markets in the past, a “Vase Day” where visitors could fill a vase for free or at a reduced price, and educational programs aimed at introducing children to gardening, nature, and the wonders of the natural world. The garden has also received recognition, winning an award from “Kern met Pit Groningen” for its garden development plan.
