StadsAkkers is a non-profit organic farm located on 2.5 hectares in Apeldoorn, growing a wide variety of vegetables, fruit, and herbs. The farm also has an orchard with 200 apple and pear trees. Beyond food production, the organization focuses on providing a meaningful outdoor work environment for people who may face barriers to the regular job market.
Visitors can purchase produce at the on-farm shop, ’t Akkertje. For those who want to participate directly, a self-pick subscription allows weekly harvesting. The self-pick season runs from May through October. Each week, subscribers can pick 4 to 5 different types of vegetables and fruit (when available), plus a bunch of herbs and, regularly, flowers. The expected yield averages enough for 3 to 4 meals per week, based on 200 grams per person. Self-picking is scheduled for Wednesday afternoons (13:00-16:00), Fridays (10:00-18:00), and Saturdays (09:00-12:00). During holiday periods, a friend or family member can pick on the subscriber’s behalf.
The on-farm shop is open from May 6 onward on the following schedule: Wednesday 13:00-16:00, Thursday 10:30-15:30, Friday 10:30-15:30, and Saturday 10:00-12:30. The farm is closed for the winter season from late November until May 6. A range of workshops (such as wool felting, woad dyeing, fruit tree pruning, and mushroom growing) are held throughout the year, as are three seasonal markets (spring, summer, and autumn). A wooden cabin on site, which seats up to 40 people, can be rented for private events, meetings, or workshops.
What visitors say
This self-picking farm and garden consistently receives high praise as a fantastic and unique destination in Apeldoorn. Visitors enthusiastically recommend it for its exceptional range of fresh, delicious organic vegetables, fruits, herbs, and cut flowers, many of which can be harvested directly from the land. The inviting atmosphere is frequently described as beautiful and peaceful, making it an ideal spot for relaxation.
A significant aspect highlighted by reviewers is the farm’s commendable social initiative, providing a supportive environment and meaningful work for individuals, including young people facing challenges, and relying on dedicated volunteers who meticulously maintain the gardens.
In addition to the self-picking experience, the location features a small shop offering its own produce and occasionally hosts vibrant markets and open days, giving visitors a deeper understanding of its operations. The staff consistently receives accolades for being friendly, helpful, and creating a welcoming environment. While some visitors noted that certain self-picking items might be limited in quantity and there were occasional discrepancies with online prices or stock availability, these minor points do not detract from the overwhelmingly positive impression of a place that is cherished for its quality products, community spirit, and overall charm.
