Stadsboerderij Gagelsteede in Utrecht is a city farm with a pick-your-own garden where visitors can harvest seasonal vegetables and flowers. The farm grows a variety of produce, including rare heritage breeds of vegetables, herbs, and cut flowers in its picking garden. You pay €0.50 per bunch for flowers or per item for vegetables, depending on what you pick.
The farm is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10.00 to 17.00, and is closed on Mondays. During the growing season, you can visit the harvest stall on Wednesdays to buy fresh vegetables and pick your own flowers from the flower garden. The farm also has a small farm shop and café run by volunteers, where you can buy coffee, cake, and seasonal produce like eggs, honey, and vegetables when available.
Gagelsteede is designed to be accessible, with wheelchair-friendly paths, seating, and a disabled toilet. The farm is located in Overvecht, a residential area in northern Utrecht, and is part of a larger park with a public playground nearby. The farm also hosts educational activities for children, including birthday parties and school programmes, and offers volunteer opportunities for those interested in helping with animal care, gardening, or events.
What visitors say
Families with young children keep coming back to this well-kept city farm. The animals—goats, sheep, rabbits, ponies and more—are clean and friendly, and most can be petted under supervision. The staff and volunteers are kind and patient, especially with children asking questions. Next to the farm is a large playground with swings, a zip line and a sandpit, and in summer a shallow paddling pool is filled around noon. Parents appreciate the new coffee machine, though a few wish there were a proper café. The farm is compact and easy to navigate with small children, but older kids may find the playground less challenging. Some visitors mention dirty toilets or a lack of atmosphere, but most describe it as a pleasant, relaxed spot for a few hours.
