Steede Hoge Woerd

Steede Hoge Woerd

This network of five city farms and six city gardens spread across Utrecht provides a variety of engaging experiences for all ages, fostering a connection with nature and promoting sustainable living. These locations are generally open throughout the year, inviting visitors to interact with farm animals, explore diverse gardens, and participate in educational and recreational activities.

Many sites offer self-picking opportunities. Visitors can pick their own flowers from designated picking gardens, typically available during the summer season. Depending on the specific location and the time of year, it is also possible to harvest various vegetables, herbs, and some fruits directly from the gardens. Certain locations feature a “harvest cabinet” or a dedicated stall where freshly picked seasonal produce can be purchased.

Beyond self-picking, the farms and gardens boast natural playgrounds, offer chances to assist with animal care, and host a wide array of workshops, lectures, and themed events year-round. Educational programs for schools emphasize local food production, biodiversity, and sustainable practices. Most city farms are largely wheelchair accessible, offering amenities like accessible paths and disabled toilets. Additionally, spaces are available for rent for events such as parties and meetings.

What visitors say

This well-regarded city farm, also recognized as a children’s farm, is highly recommended as an engaging and educational destination, especially for families with young children. Visitors consistently praise its diverse array of animals, extensive outdoor spaces, and adventurous natural playground, which allow children to interact with animals, play with water, and explore vegetable gardens. Many appreciate the convenience of free entry and parking, making it an accessible and enjoyable outing.

The facility is often described as neat, modern, and notably clean compared to similar places. Beyond the farm experience, the location boasts a pleasant cafe and is integrated with historical elements, including a “Castellum” or museum that offers valuable insights and workshops for both school groups and general visitors. A volunteer’s positive feedback highlights a supportive team and a well-maintained environment, ensuring both the garden’s beauty and the animals’ well-being.

While the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, some visitors have noted minor areas for improvement, such as unclear signage that can make navigation challenging, and a few comments regarding a limited variety of animals or the somewhat simple layout of their enclosures. Nevertheless, it remains a fantastic choice for a leisurely stroll or a fun, informative morning out with little ones.
