Steede Hoge Woerd

Steede Hoge Woerd is a city farm located on the grounds of Castellum Hoge Woerd in the Leidsche Rijn, Vleuten, and De Meern area of Utrecht. Situated atop the remains of a Roman fort, it is a unique site where history, nature, and culture come together. This accessible and lively destination is designed for visitors of all ages, offering opportunities to meet farm animals, play, and engage with the natural environment.

The farm features a pick-your-own flower garden that opens in the summer, allowing visitors to arrange their own colorful bouquet. A seasonal harvest stand on the farmyard sells fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruit. The old pear orchard in front of the Castellum is a reminder of the fruit growers who once shaped the landscape. A nature playscape with sand, climbing structures, and a water pump provides ample space for children to explore and play.

Steede Hoge Woerd is open from Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is closed on Mondays, as well as on New Year’s Day, King’s Day, and Christmas Day. The farm is open until 3:30 PM on December 5th, Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Eve, and it is additionally open on Easter Monday and Pentecost Monday. During the summer school holidays, the farm is closed on Mondays.

The farm is largely wheelchair accessible, with an adapted toilet available. It offers a safe environment for transgender and LGBTQ+ individuals and is considered child-friendly. Payment can be made with debit cards, credit cards, and contactless mobile payments. Free street parking is available. Dogs are not permitted on site, with the exception of service dogs.

What visitors say

This well-regarded city farm, also recognized as a children’s farm, is highly recommended as an engaging and educational destination, especially for families with young children. Visitors consistently praise its diverse array of animals, extensive outdoor spaces, and adventurous natural playground, which allow children to interact with animals, play with water, and explore vegetable gardens. Many appreciate the convenience of free entry and parking, making it an accessible and enjoyable outing.

The facility is often described as neat, modern, and notably clean compared to similar places. Beyond the farm experience, the location boasts a pleasant cafe and is integrated with historical elements, including a “Castellum” or museum that offers valuable insights and workshops for both school groups and general visitors. A volunteer’s positive feedback highlights a supportive team and a well-maintained environment, ensuring both the garden’s beauty and the animals’ well-being.

While the overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, some visitors have noted minor areas for improvement, such as unclear signage that can make navigation challenging, and a few comments regarding a limited variety of animals or the somewhat simple layout of their enclosures. Nevertheless, it remains a fantastic choice for a leisurely stroll or a fun, informative morning out with little ones.
