Steege's Erf

Steege's Erf

Steege’s Erf is a farmstead and multi-functional venue located in the rural outskirts of Kampen, at Zwartendijk 3. The property has been in the same family for five generations, originally operating as a dairy farm until 2003. It has since been transformed into a space that combines recreation, care services, and rental facilities, with a strong commitment to sustainability and community connection.

A key feature is the pick-your-own garden (pluktuin). The garden opens in April with tulips (around 4,000 bulbs are planted annually), allowing visitors to pull their own tulips by the bulb. From the end of June, a summer garden opens with a diverse range of perennials and summer flowers ideal for making bouquets. Sunflowers are also grown from seeds collected the previous year. The pick-your-own garden and rest point are open from March to October.

The farm is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00. Additional amenities include a self-service rest point (rustpunt) for walkers and cyclists, a small playground with a water pump, a beehive for local honey production, and rental options for tandems, market stalls, a silent disco set, an ice cream bike, and a popcorn machine. The business also hosts a care farm (zorgboerderij) in partnership with Uniek4U, offering daytime activities for participants. The site features two renovated rental spaces: the Ni’je Stal for meetings and the Deel for larger family or business gatherings, both equipped with modern amenities. The farmstead operates with a focus on climate consciousness, using a pellet stove, solar panels, and heat recovery systems, with a goal of being self-sufficient in energy from April to September.

What visitors say

This charming location, often described as a tranquil “rustpunt” or rest stop, consistently receives high praise from visitors for its welcoming atmosphere and diverse offerings. It’s a popular spot for cyclists and walkers seeking a break, where they can enjoy self-service refreshments like good coffee, tea, cold drinks, ice cream, and especially appreciated homemade apple pie, all available for a small price.

The farm is particularly family-friendly, boasting a pleasant play area for children, opportunities to interact with farm animals like feeding chickens (though some note changes over time, with the playground layout improved and bees placed closer to the beautiful blooming flowers), and a picturesque pick-your-own garden. Many reviewers highlight the spacious, clean, and well-maintained grounds, often decorated with taste, offering a cozy and relaxing environment.

Beyond casual visits, the venue is also frequently recommended for hosting various events, from birthday parties and family gatherings to workshops and celebrations, with guests commending the friendly hosts and excellent catering. Situated in a lovely rural setting near Kampen and the Reevediep, it provides essential amenities such as clean toilets, bicycle repair tools, a first-aid kit, and even a book-swapping point, enhancing the overall visitor experience. While minor suggestions for improvement occasionally surface, such as outdoor lighting or a temporary issue with a water pump, the overwhelming sentiment is one of enjoyment and a strong desire to return.
