Stichting Fruithof Frederiksoord

Fruithof Frederiksoord is a living outdoor museum and heritage orchard spread across 8 hectares in Frederiksoord, Netherlands. It serves as an important gene bank, preserving over 550 different historic fruit varieties, about half of which hold an “urgent” heritage status. The orchard is a park-like environment with smaller plots surrounded by flowering trees, shrubs, and berries, and is maintained by a dedicated group of volunteers. It features a historical grapevine greenhouse and a nature path called the “Struunpad,” which includes an insect tower for wild bees.

Visitors can self-pick a wide variety of fruit including apples, pears, plums, and quinces. The main picking and sales season runs from August to November, when a sales stall in the orchard offers freshly picked fruit and pressed apple juice from the orchard’s own apples. During this period, a self-service shop is also open daily for fruit purchases. Additionally, the historic grapevine greenhouse produces grapes that are available for purchase from early September to mid-October.

The orchard is open daily for visitors. The self-service shop for fruit is available from September through November. For purchasing fruit trees or receiving help, staff are present every Wednesday from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM. General visiting hours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and on Sundays. The orchard is closed on Saturdays. The facility is wheelchair accessible, with a wheelchair-accessible entrance and parking, and is suitable for children. Public toilets are also available on site.

What visitors say

This self-picking farm and garden consistently garners positive reviews, celebrated for its beautifully maintained grounds and picturesque setting. Visitors frequently praise the wide variety of fruit trees, particularly the many different apple breeds, noting the affordability of fresh apples and homemade apple juice.

A significant highlight is the array of well-organized and enjoyable events hosted throughout the year, including the “Lentefair,” “Zomerfair,” and “Paard en Erfgoed” (Horse and Heritage). These fairs are consistently described as lively, engaging, and “gezellig” (cozy or pleasant), featuring numerous interesting stalls, diverse shows with horses and dogs, bird of prey demonstrations, and pony rides for children. Many appreciate the romantic ambiance of the orchard, offering ample space and shaded seating under the fruit trees. These annual gatherings are considered a must-visit, often enhanced by favorable weather.

Beyond special events, the location also houses a beautiful interactive museum and offers highly educational fruit tree pruning courses, taught by a dedicated group of volunteers focused on preserving ancient fruit varieties.

While the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, a few minor observations were made. Some visitors noted that certain fairs seemed a bit “slimmed down” or that shows felt rushed. There was also a comment about the increasing commercialization of some events, with a proliferation of clothing stalls. Other small remarks included lukewarm coffee, the occasional presence of caterpillars, and the wish for the fruit gardens to be open more often. Despite these minor points, the establishment is widely recommended as an enriching and delightful destination.
