Tuinderij Waalwortel 🥕

Tuinderij Waalwortel is a regenerative self-picking garden located in Nijmegen-West, situated behind the former Sancta Maria convent in Hees. The garden operates on a “no-dig” method, which involves minimal soil disturbance, instead building raised beds with cardboard, wood chips, and compost. This approach aims to enhance soil structure and support beneficial soil organisms, going beyond conventional organic farming practices by completely avoiding pesticides and artificial fertilizers.

Visitors can become members through an annual subscription, which allows them to harvest fresh, seasonal produce from May to November, covering approximately 30 weeks. A weekly email provides guidance on available items, harvesting techniques, and recipe suggestions. For new members, staff are available on specific days (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday from 2026) to assist. Free trial picking sessions are also offered on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons, including a guided tour and the opportunity to harvest available vegetables.

The garden offers a diverse range of produce, featuring over 50 varieties of vegetables and 6 types of herbs. Typically, members can harvest 5 to 6 different items each week, encompassing both well-known and less common vegetables, and sometimes even flowers or fruits from the surrounding area. Additionally, members have the option to pick up coffee grounds mushrooms monthly from the Versfabriek, available through a separate subscription.

The garden currently spans about 1000m² and has plans for further expansion. While the 2025 season is fully booked, applications for the 2026 season, commencing in May, are open.
