De Warmoes is a historical market garden in Lent, near Nijmegen, Netherlands. It aims to preserve and share the knowledge of the former market gardeners (“warmoezeniers”) of Lent, who supplied the city of Nijmegen with fruits and vegetables. The garden cultivates over a hundred different varieties of vegetables year-round without pesticides, prioritizing circularity and biodiversity.
Visitors can harvest their own produce during the growing season. You can pick your own beetroots, raspberries, kohlrabi, berries, and field flowers. There is also a museum about the history of market gardening in Lent and a garden café that serves food made with produce from the garden. The farm is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM. It is closed on Monday and Tuesday, although it is open for groups and rentals on those days. It is possible to rent the garden café with boomgaard. They are planning on rebuilding the varkensschuur, which broke down in 2023. They also organize activities and workshops.
What visitors say
The “Warmoes” is a charming market garden and historical garden in Lent, near Nijmegen, praised for its tranquil atmosphere and feeling of escape despite being increasingly surrounded by new developments. Visitors appreciate the opportunity to pick their own flowers, fruits, and vegetables, particularly during the Saturday plukdagen, as well as the presence of friendly volunteers and a variety of activities for children. The on-site cafe/restaurant features homemade, often organic, food and drinks, including smoothies, cakes, and lunches, often using ingredients directly from the garden. Many visitors mention the relaxing experience of sitting in the orchard. The Warmoes also hosts events and camping (like during the 4daagse), and offers educational opportunities related to gardening and nature. While generally well-regarded, some reviewers noted occasional issues with slow service, a somewhat limited menu, high prices compared to supermarkets, and in the past, a somewhat basic interior or worn furniture. A few mentioned the staff could be more attentive. Overall, it’s considered a unique and worthwhile destination, particularly during the warmer months, for those seeking a natural and relaxed experience.
